I am a Teenage Feminist: My roommates are watching "Tough Love" on MTV

iamateenagefeminist:

This show is awful. They take women who don’t have the best luck in relationships and “fix” them so that they can get married.

WHAT?!

And then I hear the main guy tell the women “You need to have that ‘wow’ factor so that another woman doesn’t come in and scoop up your guy”.

What is this?

Isn’t that the sort of stuff they used to tell women who’s husbands cheated on them:”It’s your fault because you didn’t have sex/cook/clean/submit/do whatever the way he wanted”.

“Some sociologists argue that in U.S. culture, girls and women experience a “symbolic clitoridectomy.” In other words, even though women have clitorises in the physical sense, conversations about the clitoris are absent from discussions about sex. This is ironic given the hypersexualization of women’s bodies in mainstream media. When the clitoris is symbolically removed its importance is wildly understated, and presumed insignificant in sexual play.”

The Clitoris: Most. Awkward. Discussion. Ever! | SociologyFocus (via linzyxxxxx)

We also have a PIV (penis-in-vagina) centric society when it comes to any discussions of sex. That is, that women need penises to have orgasms, and that most women who have PIV sex experience orgasms, which is simply untrue.

“Nothing freaks me out/pisses me off more than abstinence-only education. Basically, it’s the most naive form of sex education you can get: Sex is bad, don’t have it until you’re married, contraception doesn’t work. Somehow educators think this will convince kids to not have sex. Compare that to comprehensive sex education that teaches abstinence but also makes sure that teens have medically correct information about contraception, STDs, and the like. It’s reality-based sex ed that understands that no matter how many scare tactics you throw at people, they’re still going to do what they want.”
